Difference between PhD and doctoral dissertations

In Ukraine, two academic degrees are established: Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and Doctor of Sciences.  Accordingly, there are two types of dissertations that differ in the level of scientific novelty, the scale of the research, and the requirements for the candidate.

The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) is the first academic and educational-scientific degree. It is obtained at the third level of higher education – postgraduate studies – on the basis of a master’s degree.

A PhD dissertation (sometimes referred to as a candidate dissertation, which is a historical term from the previous system) must demonstrate the candidate’s ability to conduct independent research, formulate well-grounded conclusions, and obtain results that have scientific novelty and practical significance.

A dissertation for the Doctor of Sciences degree is a higher academic qualification work. It contains fundamental theoretical or experimental results that constitute a significant contribution to the development of the relevant field of science. The requirements regarding the scope of research, number of publications, and level of validation of results are significantly higher than for a PhD.

Thus, the main difference between these levels lies in the scale of scientific contribution, the depth of research, and the qualification requirements for the candidate.

Structure of PhD and doctoral dissertations: a step-by-step plan

A proper structure is one of the key conditions for successful preparation of academic work. Regardless of whether it is a PhD or doctoral dissertation, most studies follow a similar logical structure.

The work begins with an introduction, where the relevance of the topic is justified, the aim and objectives are formulated, and the object, subject, methods, and scientific novelty are defined. The introduction forms the first impression of the author’s level of preparation.

The next chapter is the literature review. It analyzes current academic sources, identifies unresolved issues, and justifies the need for conducting the research.

The methodology chapter describes the methods used and approaches to data collection and analysis. It is important to explain why the selected methods are optimal for addressing the research objectives.

The main body presents the research results, their analysis, and comparison with the findings of other authors. In doctoral dissertations, this chapter is usually more extensive and in-depth.

The final chapter formulates conclusions, scientific novelty, and the practical significance of the results obtained. A list of references and appendices are also required.

A clear and logical structure significantly improves the quality of the work and facilitates its evaluation by experts.

Formatting requirements for PhD and doctoral dissertations

The formatting of academic work is an important component of preparation for the defense. A PhD or doctoral dissertation must comply with established academic standards regarding structure, formatting, and referencing.

The main requirements include a consistent formatting style, correct presentation of tables and figures, numbering of sections, accurate referencing, and compliance of the bibliography with national standards.

Particular attention should be paid to the reference list. Sources must be up-to-date, academically reliable, and formatted in accordance with the requirements of the educational institution or relevant authority.

In addition to technical formatting, publication requirements must also be considered. To be admitted to the defense, research results must be published in academic outlets. In the case of PhD or doctoral work, publications in international academic journals are often required.

Failure to comply with formal requirements may result in the work being returned for revision; therefore, formatting should be carefully checked at the stage of preparing the final version.

Preparation for dissertation defense: key considerations

Completing the text is only one stage of preparation. A dissertation for the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) or Doctor of Sciences degree must undergo validation and expert evaluation prior to the defense.

An important component is the publication aspect. During the preparation of the dissertation, research results are published in academic outlets in accordance with established requirements. These publications may be assessed for compliance with professional criteria, indexing, and academic integrity. Publications confirm the scientific novelty and practical significance of the results obtained.

Another important stage is the validation of results through participation in academic conferences, seminars, and professional discussions. This allows the candidate to receive feedback and prepare for possible questions during the defense.

Special attention should be paid to preparing the presentation. It should clearly and concisely reflect the aim of the research, the methods used, the main results, and their significance. It is recommended to prepare a presentation and rehearse answers to typical questions in advance.

Systematic preparation for the defense helps reduce anxiety and increases the chances of successfully completing the academic work.
